CHAPTER III
HARVEY S. LAWTON
First Generation
He married twice. He married PRUDENCE COLE in New York, 1838. PRUDENCE was born in New York 10 APR 1821, the daughter of EBENEZER and PENELOPE "NELLIE" (PARKER) COLE. PRUDENCE died 19 MAR 1867 in Coopersville, Ottawa Co, Michigan, at 45 years of age. Her body was interred MAR 1867 in Wright Twp, Ottawa Co, Michigan, Advent Cemetery. He married Anna Marie SCHEMORHORN Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, 26 MAR 1868. Anna was born in Canada 20 DEC 1820, the daughter of Cornelius Schemerhorn. Anna died 7 OCT 1894 in Wright Twp, Ottawa, Michigan, at 73 years of age. Her body was interred 9 OCT 1894 in Walker Twp, Kent, Michigan, Greenwood Cemetery. Harvey was a farmer. He and Prudence and their family came to Ottawa County, Michigan from St. Lawrence Co, New York in 1848. It is not known if he traveled with his parents and siblings or followed later. They settled on an 84 acre farm in Wright Twp. southeast of Coopersville toward Marne. He and brother, Perley, had adjoining properties in Wright Township. Some time in the late 1800s Harvey sold his property in Wright Twp. and moved to Polkton Twp. north of Coopersville near the Gates homestead. In 1900 Harvey was living with his daughter, Ellen, who was twice widowed, in Big Rapids at 629 Rose Ave.

married a second time in 1868, and has three sons and six
daughters. The eldest son, George, was married in 1877 to Miss
Woodworth, and assists in the management of the farm. Mr. L. is
highly respected, and is one of the early pioneers.
The Coopersville Observer March 29, 1883
SURPRISE--On Monday evening a large number of Mr. and Mrs.
Harvey Lawton's friends and neighbors, fearing they did not
sufficiently realize how long they had been married, called to
remind them of the fact that they had been married 16 years. The
friends who had the matter in charge made all arrangements for
the company and gave them plenty of cake and warm _____. Several
from this village were present and all seemingly enjoyed
themselves. A very nice easy chair and an elegant hanging lamp
from the company and a glass milk pitcher from Addie Gates, a
majolica syrup dish from Mrs. Geo. Haas, a neck-tie from George
Lawton and a glass fruit dish from Mrs. Allen Coller served to
remind Mr. and Mrs. Lawton that they have many warm friends.
The Coopersville Observer August 22, 1884:
A family re-union was had at the residence of Harvey Lawton
yesterday. All of the children (nine) were present--Charles,
George, Walter, Lucy, Ellen, Adelia, Mary, Augusta and
Jennie--all married except Walter. The services of our
photographer, Mr. Thurston, were secured and a fine view of the
children in a group taken. Altogether it was a very happy
occasion.
The Coopersville Observer February 27, 1885:
During this severe weather the cats of the neighborhood have
found an asylum at H.S. Lawton's to the number of some half a
dozen. Said cats seem to be well satisfied with their fare. Soon
as the weather modifies so it is safe for a cat to ride, they
wish their owners to call, prove property, pay charges and take
them home.

Her body was interred 15 AUG 1917 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery. She married twice. She married LEWIS LEONARD GATES in Ottawa Co, Michigan, 06 AUG 1855. LEWIS was born in St. Lawrence Co, New York 11 AUG 1835, the son of LEONARD W. and ALMIRA (LILLIE) GATES. LEWIS died 22 JUN 1904 in Polkton Twp, Ottawa, Michigan, at 68 years of age. His body was interred 24 JUN 1904 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery. Lewis' father, Leonard, passed away when Lewis was seven. In 1850, Lewis is shown living with his Uncle William and Aunt Angeline Gates in Philadelphia Twp, Jefferson Co, New York. His mother had remarried by this time and had other children with her second husband, Bradford Tiffany. Lewis came from Edwards, New York in 1852 at age 17 to Wright Twp, Ottawa Co, Michigan and settled in the township of Polkton four years later; so he was one of the earlier settlers of Coopersville.
Lewis was a farmer, and the 1894 State Census gives details on what the Lewis Gates farm was like. It consisted of 40 acres of tilled land valued at $2500. Machinery was worth $400 and livestock were worth $300. Total farm production in 1893 was $400. Animals on the farm were 2 horses over 3 years old, 2 cows, 3 pigs under one year and one over a year. There were 20 chickens yielding 150 dozen eggs, sold for $21. Six acres of clover produced 10 bushels of seed, and 15 acres of other meadows produced 20 tons of hay with $160 sold. Also produced was a ton of straw with $4 worth sold. The cow produced 700 gals of milk and 300 lbs of butter. There were 6 acres of Indian corn producing 100 bushels and 9 acres of oats producing 333 bushels with 250 bushels sold for $87. Fifty acres of winter wheat yielded 40 bushels, and 40 bushels of potatoes were raised. At the time of the census, June 1, 1894, currently growing were over 8 acres Indian corn, over 9 acres of oats, 5 acres of winter wheat, over an acre of potatoes, 4 acres of clover and 18 acres of hay. Also on the farm were 2 acres of apple orchards consisting of 60 trees.
An article in the Coopersville Observer September 8, 1881 stated, "About 14 bushels of wheat was stolen from Louis Gates and 8 bushels from Geo. Marshall and his mother, 3 miles north-west of the village. last Sunday night. The eight bushels was in bags. No clue of the thieves."
Lewis' obituary stated that he and Lucy had 6 children; however, only Edward was still alive at the time he passed away, and except for Addie, the death records and/or graves of the other children have not been found. In the 1900 census it states that Lucy and Lewis had 5 children, but only one, Edward, was living in 1900.
Lucy married Henry Victoria GATES, her first husband’s cousin, in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, 10 OCT 1913. Henry was born in New Hampshire 09 JUL 1839, the son of Henry "Harry" GATES and Mary A. "Polly". He had been married to Sarah Jane HENDERSON in New York, 1 APR 1860 by whom he had children Menzo "Joseph", Minnie M.(died young), Henry "Mead" and Margaret "Maggie" May (married to a Mr. SMITH). The Coopersville Observer August 17, 1917: Obituary
Lucy M. Lawton was born in Fowler, N.Y., July 7, 1840. She
came with her parents to Ottawa county, Mich., in 1848, where
they settled on a farm in Wright township. On August 6, 1855 she
was married to Lewis Gates, and to this union six children were
born. Since his death she has resided most of the time with her
only son on the farm where she went as a bride sixty-two years
ago and where she died, August 13, 1917, aged seventy-eight
years, one month and six days. Mrs. Gates was converted and joined the Free Methodist Church
in 1871, under the labors of the late W. R. Cusick, and ever
after kept the faith and stood firm for truth and righteousness,
and what she believed to be right. At the golden wedding of her
sister, Mrs. Haas, July 4th, of this year, where the family were
all together, she made the remark that she hoped the Lord would
take her home before her son and the desire of her heart was
granted. She leaves to mourn three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Saunders of
North Paris; Mrs. Jennie Wisse, of Grand Rapids; and Mrs. Mary
Haas of Coopersville; also two brothers, Charles Lawton, of
California, and Walter S. Lawton, of Grand Rapids; and one son,

3. Ellen L.
2 LAWTON (HARVEY SEAVER1) was born in St.Lawrence Co, New York SEP 1841. She died BEF 1933. The exact date and location is unknown at this time. She married four times. She first married James E. WILLIAMS 20 SEP 1857. He was born in New York 1834, and died 8 FEB 1885 in Hart, Oceana, Michigan, at 50 years of age. James was in the Civil War in Company O, 21st Michigan Infantry. He enlisted in Grand Rapids 13 February 1864 and was discharged 15 May 1865. He was evidently sick most of that time. He was a carpenter and a miller, and he and Ellen lived in Hart, Michigan until his death at the age of 51, at which time Ellen moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. There was also another James Williams living in Oceana County at the same time who was also a miller, so in the written material mentioning James Williams, it is very difficult to tell them apart. There was a James Williams who built a general merchandise store in 1869 in a little area known at that time as Churchill's Corners. It is now a part of Shelby. There was a James Williams who belonged to the Baptist Society of Hart. A James Williams built a mill (not sure if this is Shelby or Hart) begun in the Fall of 1872 and finished in Feb 1873 during the terrible winter, at a cost of $7,000 known as the Malcolm and Williams mill. James is buried in Hart Cemetery in Hart, Oceana, Michigan.Second, she married Charles H. MILLER in Newaygo, Newaygo, Michigan, 31 JUL 1890. Charles was born in Vermont CA 1820. He had been married to Morilla BEF 1870 by whom he had two known children—Cora and Marshall. Charles died 20 MAR 1894 at 73 years of age. His body was interred MAR 1894 in Solon Twp, Kent, Michigan, Elmwood Cemetery. Charles was married two times previous to marrying Ellen and was a carpenter. He and his first wife had lived in Cedar Springs.
Third, she married John Wesley SAUNDERS in Big Rapids, Mecosta, Michigan, 29 MAR 1901. John was born in Somerset, Niagara, New York 9 AUG 1834. He had married Martha BERRY in Sweden, Monroe, New York, in 1855, by whom he had four known children—Marian m. Robert ELLIOT, Lizzie m. Asa DUNING, Saxton (died young) and Lucy who married Chester WEST. John had married Ella E. PETERMAN in Mecosta Co, Michigan, 19 JUL 1882. John died 7 DEC 1911 in Green Twp, Mecosta, Michigan, at 77 years of age. Yes, he was a carpenter also, and they lived in North Paris. After John’s death Ellen moved to Branch, Michigan.
Lastly, she married Peter BLADE before 1924, and they lived in Flint, Michigan.
The Coopersville Observer, February 20, 1885: Mr. Jones Williams, son-in-law of Harvey Lawton, died at Hart, Oceana Co., on the 8th inst. He was well-known in this vicinity.
Pentwater News, 12 Feb 1885: Mr. James Williams, an old and respected resident of Hart, and well known throughout the county, died on Sunday night last, at 11 o'clock. He had been quite ill for several days and dissolution hourly expected yet the news of his death cast a shadow over the entire village. Deceased was a millwright by trade, and evidence of his mechanical skill are to be found in many of our mills. The new flouring mill at Pentwater was the last upon which he was employed. He was a prominent member of the Masonic Fraternity, and was buried under their auspices yesterday, the Rev. Wm. L. Tilden, an old friend of the family, preaching the funeral sermon. Mr. Williams was 51 years of age at the time of his death. His wife and two grown up children survive him.

Coopersville Observer: 1/3/1890: China wedding given M/M George Lane (20th anniv)
Coopersville Observer: 3/14/1890: Mr. John Lawton & Miss Ellen Williams of GR guests at Mr. Geo. Lane's Coopersville Observer, Friday, March 24, 1911, Page 1: Mrs. Augusta Lane, wife of George Lane, of this place, died at the family residence at 6:30 o'clock Sunday morning, March 13, 1911, after an illness of several months and great suffering from a complication of diseases. She was born in Fowler, N.Y. April 26, 1846. In her childhood her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Lawton, moved to Michigan, settling in Wright township, Ottawa county. December 25, 1869, she was united in marriage to George Lane, and they lived on a farm in Wright township until about twelve years ago, when they moved to Coopersville. Mrs. Lane was a prominent member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the members of the local lodge attended the services at the church in a body. The floral offerings were very beautiful. Her life was gentle, but like the still waters it was deep. In her heart of hearts she carried those she loved, and her hand was never weary, her step never failed, in administering to, caring for or waiting upon those who were in any way dependent upon her. Nothing on earth is changed, only a loving wife and mother is gone. She is survived by a husband, one daughter, Miss Sarah Lane, and one son, Louis Lane, of Grand Rapids; five sisters, Mrs. Adelia Hunt of Cadillac, Mrs. Ellen Saunders of Paris, Mrs. Lucy Gates and Mrs. Mary Haas, of Coopersville, Mrs. Jennie Wisse, of Grand Rapids; two brothers, Charles Lawton, of South Bend, Ind., and Walter Lawton of Grand Rapids, besides other relatives and a large circle of friends.
Funeral services were held in the M.E. church Wednesday afternoon, March 15, conducted by the pastor, Rev. F.W. Haist, and the body was laid to rest in Coopersville cemetery.
Grand Rapids Herald, May 13, 1926, Page 12:
FUNERAL RITES TO BE HELD TODAY FOR AGED COOPERSVILLE VETERAN
COOPERSVILLE. May 13--Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock for George Lane, 86, civil war veteran, who had resided here virtually all his life. The rites will be in charge of the local Masonic chapter. Mr. Lane died Monday, after a brief illness. Mr. Lane, a charter member of Coopersville lodge, F. & A. M., was born in Canada in 1840, and came to Coopersville at the age of 16, and was employed by Sylvester Jackson, one of the first residents of Ottawa county. At the outbreak of the Civil war he enlisted at Ionia, with the Second Independent company of Michigan Sharpshooters, serving two and a half years and participating in the battles of Spottsylvania Courthouse, Wilderness, Petersburg, Cole Harbor, and many others. In 1869 he was married to Augusta Lawton, who died 15 years ago. Surviving are a son, Louis F. Lane of Grand Rapids, and a daughter, Mrs. L. G. Slaughter of Coopersville.
Coopersville Observer, Friday, May 14, 1926, Page 1:
Death Calls Second G.A.R. Vet in Two Weeks - For the second time within the past two weeks Coopersville
has paid its final tribute to veterans of the Civil War.
Thursday, April 29, John Cooney was laid to rest and on Monday
afternoon, George Lane, another of the "boys in blue" answered
the final roll call. Thus are the veterans of the War of '61 to
'65 passing from our midst, one by one. Mr. Lane, who would have been eighty-six years of age next
July, was born in Canada in 1840, and when sixteen years of age,
came to Coopersville, and was given employment by Sylvester
Jackson, father of John Jackson, and one of the earliest
pioneers in this locality, and has ever since been a resident of
Coopersville. He answered Lincoln's call for volunteers at the time of
Civil War, and enlisted at Ionia in the Second Independent
Company of Michigan Sharpshootsrs, serving with this company for
two and a half years, in some of the hardest battles of the war.
Mr. Lane participated in the battles of Spottsylvania
Courthouse, the Wilderness, Petersburg, Cole Harbor and numerous
other major engagements and skirmishes. Wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness, Mr. Lane recovered,
but again was wounded at the three day engagement of Welden's
Railroad. He knew all of the privations and hardships of army
life and something of the suffering associated with life among
the wounded. But no one has heard him utter a word of regret
that he gave some of the best years of his life to his country's
service, and his sacrifice in that respect has been matched by
the many sacrifices which he has made for his community and
neighbors. He was married in 1869 to Augusta Lawton, who passed away
fifteen years ago. He is survived by two children, Louis F. Lane
of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. L.G. Slaughter of Coopersville. He was also a charter member of Coopersville Lodge A.F. &
A.M., which organization had charge of the funeral services
which were held at his late residence Thursday afternoon at two
o'clock, Rev. Jenkins officiating. Interment in the Coopersville
cemetery.

CRYSTAL WEDDING--A large number of friends of Mr. and Mrs.
Geo. W. Haas proved to them last Friday evening that their
calendar was kept correctly in regard to their 15th wedding

pleasant evening was passed by both the surprised and
surprisers. A fine supper was partaken of with evident relish,
satisfying the inner man beyond all possible complaint. Rev.

dispensed with. The presents consisted of a silver napkin ring

CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING - On the Fourth
It was a happy crowd of folks that gathered at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. George W. Haas Wednesday, July Fourth, to
felicitate them upon the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage.
It was on July 4, 1867, that George W. Haas and Miss Mary A.
Lawton were united in the holy bonds of matrimony "for better or
for worse," at the home of the bride's parents in Wright
township, Ottawa county, Michigan. Until the year 1898, they
lived on the farm four miles northeast of Coopersville, now
owned by F.E. Baker, where they tilled the soil, raised a family
of four children, two of whom are still living, and by thrift
and economic foresight succeeded in securing a competency, so
that they could leave their farm and spend their declining years
in Coopersville, where they have won the respect of all, and
they bid fair to reside here many years to come. The gathering Wednesday was a deserved compliment, and the
eighty guests presents showered them with congratulations and
many tokens of respect fitting to the occasion, a purse of $30
in gold being one of them. The presentation speech was made by
John Jackson, who in a few well chosen remarks delivered the
gifts to Mr. and Mrs. Haas. Songs were rendered by Mr. and Mrs.
George Marshall and daughter, an address by Dr. I. Wisse, of
Grand Rapids, and remarks by volunteers helped to add to the
pleasures of the day. Mr. Haas was born in Cleveland, O., in 1838, and Mrs. Haas
was born in St. Lawrence county, N.Y. in 1849. Mr. Haas is a
veteran of the civil war, enlisting in 1861, when the first call
was made and served until the close. Their son Charles Haas and his wife, of Stryker, O., and Mrs.
L.J. Campbell and daughter Marjorie Jean of Buchanan, were
present. Her husband was unable to be present, on account of
being called east on important business. The out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Haas, Dr. and
Mrs. I. Wisse, Mrs. Anna Shimmel, all of Grand Rapids. Mr. and
Mrs. Wm. Haas and family, of Bauer; Mr. and Mrs. John Haas, of
Coorinth; Mrs. Ellen Saunders, of Branch; Mrs. Raymond Clark, of
Toledo, O.; Mrs. Catherine Bowerbach, of Bryan, O.; Mr. and Mrs.
Morris Haas, of Sparta; Mrs. Chas. Brown, of Berlin; Mrs. Nellie
Cargill and Mrs. Ema Birdsell, of Hart; Mr. and Mrs. A. Rogers,
of Ravenna; and, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Bean, of Conklin. Light refreshments were served.
The Coopersville Observer 29 February 1924, Page 5: Mary Angelia Lawton was born in Fowler, St. Lawrence County, New York August 12, 1848 and entered into eternal rest with the Saviour she loved February 18, 1924, aged seventy-five years, six months and six days. She came to Michigan with her parents, Harvey and Prudence Lawton, pioneers of Ottawa County when a mere child, and settled on a farm two and one-half miles southeast of Coopersville where she resided until her marriage with George W. Haas July 4, 1867. To them four children were born: Charley, Gertie, Myrtle and Hazel. Two, Gertie and Myrtle going to their Heavenly Father's home at the ages of one year and three months and two years and three and a half months, respectively. Her home with her companion, for the next thirty years was on a farm four miles northwest of Coopersville, from which in 1897 they removed to Coopersville where they have since resided. She was the sixth child of a family of eleven children, six having preceded her in death: Eber, Ada and George Lawton, Adelia Hunt, Augusta Lane and Lucy Gates. She leaves to mourn: an aged husband; one son, Charles V. Haas of Stryker, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs. Leon Jay Campbell of Buchanan, Mich.; two grandchildren, Marjory Jean and Leona Fern Campbell; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Blade of Flint, Mich., and Mrs. Iman Wisse of Grand Rapids; two brothers, Walter Lawton of Grand Rapids, and Charles of San Francisco, California. These have a vacancy in their lives, together with all who knew her, that can never be filled. To know her was to love her, is the word on every side. Her entire life was given in service to those around her--self forgetful, self-sacrificing always. Her self-chosen text: "She hath done what she could exemplifies her daily as she faithfully met each day's duties. She received Holy Baptism in her home on March 18, 1908, administered by Rev. S.B. Ford. February 4, 1924, she was stricken with paralysis and throughout her illness of two weeks her same loving nature asserted itself in consideration for the comfort of those about her. Her passing was in accordance with her life--peaceful, gentle, majestic.
Grand Rapids Herald, February 20, 1924 - COOPERSVILLE--Funeral services for Mrs. George Haas, who died here Monday afternoon, following a brief illness, will be held from the family residence Wednesday.

When he was twelve years old he moved to Michigan with his parents, into the then unbroken forest. In April, 1861 he enlisted in Company C, Second Michigan Cavalry, under Phil Sheridan, serving thru the entire was of four years and participating in over one hundred battles. On July 4, 1867 he was united in marriage to Mary A. Lawton of Wright township and to this union four children were born: Charles V. of Stryker, Ohio; Gertrude and Myrtle deceased, and Mrs. Hazel F. Campbell of Buchanan, Mich. They resided on their farm in Wright township until 1897 since when they have made Coopersville their home. Mr. Haas was one of a family of eight children, all of whom have preceeded him to the better land except one sister Carolyn who resides in Grand Rapids. Since the decease of his wife last February he has spent his time alternately with his children and grandchildren Marjorie Jean and Leona Fern Campbell. While he has been failing in health for a long time he was only confined to his bed for less than three days, heart failure being the immediate cause of his death. Besides his relatives he leaves a host of friends to mourn their loss. Funeral services were held at his late home in Coopersville Wednesday afternoon, Rev. C.S. Jenkins, officiating. She died a few days later.
The Coopersville Observer, March 20, 1885: Mr. Geo. Haas' child, aged two years, fell into a pail of boiling water the other day and was badly burned.
The Coopersville Observer, March 27, 1885: Little Myrtie, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Haas of Wright, left their quiet, pleasant home for one more beautiful in the mansion of the Savior above, and by an eye of faith we can see two lovely little girls dressed in immortal white basking in the sunbeams of God's eternal glory. They are waiting for papa, mamma and little brother to come where there is no sickness, sorrow, pain or death. Myrtie was about two and one-half years old, but her mind was far beyond her years. I do not wonder those fond parents hearts best with high hopes as they saw their little daughter budding and blossoming into intelligence that was surprising to many. And how pleasant now the thought of her as she went from room to room, with her soul overflowing with joyous emotion, singing "Shall we meet beyond the river, by and by, by and by." It is a mystery to those doting parents why God permitted this strange providence but our Heavenly Father knows best. He had something better for little Myrtie than she could have had here. The question she used to sing has in a measure been answered. She has met little sister beyond the River. And is it too much to believe that they are walking hand in hand amidst the bowers of Paradise and talking of the time when they shall meet the rest of the dear family? The services were held at the residence of Mr. Haas, where a large concourse of neighbors and friends assembled to sympathies with the bereaved parents, and take the last look on earth of the sweet face of their precious child, and to follow the sacred dust to its quiet resting place. WAS DETERMINED TO DIE
George L. Lawton Takes Poison and Cuts His Throat.
HE WAS VERY DESPONDENT - A.E. Bonner's Bloodhounds Locate Body of Suicide in Woods. Despondent over the ill health which his wife had experienced
for years, and because of the poor outlook for crops on his
farm, George L. Lawton committed suicide Sunday night at his
home near Titusville, by taking a quantity of morphine, then
some paris green and finally cutting his throat with his pocket
knife. In the presence of his wife and a domestic, Lawton swallowed
both poisons and then started for the woods, a short distance
from the house, moaning and muttering. The girl notified the neighbors, who at once started a search
in the woods with the aid of lanterns. Unable to locate the
desperate man, word was sent to deputy sheriff A.E. Bonner, of
Coopersville, who went, with his bloodhounds, to the farm. The
dogs were given the scent from a pair of Lawton's shoes, which
were left in the house, and led the searchers directly to the
man. Lawton was found lying on his side, with the blood still
running from a gaping wound in his throat. He was removed to the
house and medical aid summoned, but to no avail, and he died
from the effects of the poison shortly before midnight.
Neighbors say he had threatened to end his life before, and was
continually brooding over the illness of his wife. George L. Lawton was born June 24, 1856, in Wright township,

CONTRACTOR WHO LAID CITY'S FIRST CONCRETE STREET DIES
Charles E. Williams Was Prominent Paving Man Throughout
Midwest of Country
Charles E. Williams, 76, for many years widely known in the
paving contracting business locally and in the midwest, died at
6 p.m. Monday at his home, 1551 Fulton st. E. Death was caused
by a heart attack, which culminated an illness of eight months.
He had been retired since January 1935. Williams, as a contractor, laid much of the city's first
cement curbs and sidewalks and the city's first concrete street,
Quigley blvd. SW. This was one of the first concrete pavements
laid in the United States. Later, he did asphalt paving work on
many of the city's major streets, including Division and after
the widening project. An asphalt surfacing job his firm did on
Ionia ave, between Michigan and Coldbrook sts, NE, still is in
service. Williams, as a pioneer heavy contractor here, also
built a dam across Grand river at the present city filtration
plant intake. Attended Hart School. Born in Wright township, Ottawa county, Williams attended
schools in Hart, where he lived, until he was 21 years of age.
He then came to Grand Rapids, where he operated a grocery
business on Plainfield ave for several years. He then was
appointed inspector of water mains and sewers by the city of
Grand Rapids and remained with the city until 1903, when he went
into the general contracting business with his own firm. In 1913, as a partner of the contracting firm of Williams and
Knowlson, he went to Ohio, where the firm did extensive asphalt
paving work until 1921, when he returned to Grand Rapids. In
1925, after the death of A.B. Knowlson, his business partner,
Williams formed the Grand Rapids Asphalt Paving company, serving
as manager of this firm until his retirement in 1935.

One time my grandparents, Millard and Edna Gates, took me with them to visit "Aunt Molly", who was the widow of Grandpa's older brother, Charles. She lived in Wayland in a small house that was packed with antiques and was very warm and stuffy. There were lace curtains on the windows. She seemed like a very old lady to me at the time, and was very gracious and mannerly. She must have passed away soon after that. – Susan Gates Davis

40. MILLARD M.
4 GATES (EDWARD CLINTON3, LUCY EMILINE2 LAWTON, HARVEY SEAVER1) was born in Polkton Twp, Ottawa, Michigan 02 AUG 1894. Millard died 08 JUL 1967 Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, at 72 years of age. His body was interred 10 JUL 1967 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville. He married EDNA MAE NICHOLS Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, 09 MAR 1921. Edna was born in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan 05 SEP 1902, the daughter of WALTER L. NICHOLS and CORA MAE ALLEN. Edna died 09 MAR 1985 in Grand Haven, Ottawa, Michigan, at 82 years of age. Her body was interred 12 MAR 1985 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan.
Edna was named after her father's school teacher. She always spelled her middle name Mae, but it says May on her birth certificate. Her father died when she was young and her mother moved to Grand Rapids where she worked in a millinery shop before going to work for the Umlor family in Conklin. She eventually married one of their sons, Marcus and had several more children with him, so Edna only had half-brothers and sisters. Edna went to school at St. Joseph’s School, which was one fourth mile from the homestead, on her 7th birthday and went through the 8th grade. Despite missing a lot of school to help with her younger brothers and sisters, she graduated with the highest marks for the girls. She then went to work away from home for a family where she worked from 5 in the morning until 8 or 9 at night. She worked there for almost a year and got $4 a week. Then her aunt found her a job as nursemaid for a 3 year old little girl, and she worked there a year and a half. She then worked as a maid for the Irish family. Then she worked at a confectionary and grocery store on Lyon Street in Grand Rapids. When she was 16, she went to visit her aunt and uncle in Flint. On her return, the Interurban train didn’t stop at Marne and went on to Coopersville. There she met Millard, who was working as train master and ticket agent. They were married two years later and lived in Grand Rapids the first year, and Millard worked at the Grand Rapids depot. On their first anniversary, in 1930, they moved into their home on Center Street in Coopersville. David Gates, his grandson, lived in the same house until the fall of 2000. Millard worked nights at the Interurban depot, and Edna worked at the telephone office for a few months, until she became so sick with her first pregnancy that she had to quit. Edna was the village seamstress for a long time. She always had needlework in her hands--embroidery or crocheting--and she always won prizes for it at the Berlin Fair. She also worked at a nursing home for a number of years and for a time at an egg candling business on Main Street in Coopersville.
Millard worked for 11 years for the Interurban Railroad (est. 1902) which ran between Grand Rapids and Muskegon as a ticket agent/conductor. The interurban made it possible for people to commute from the small towns to the major cities, and the round trip took 2 hours, 15 minutes. In 1928 the Interurban ceased operations due to loss of patrons to bus lines; and because there were so many private cars then, it just wasn't needed. Millard went across the street after working for the Interurban for 11 years and worked for the Coopersville Elevator for 34 years before retiring. On 24 Aug 1917 the Coopersville Observer reported that Millard M. Gates, Coopersville, failed to pass the physical examination for WWI draft. It is thought it was because he had flat feet. Both Millard and Edna were members of the United Methodist Church in Coopersville. Millard's hobbies were woodworking and hunting, and he at one time owned an Indian motorcycle. When not at work, Millard (Grandpa) used to love to work on his car, which he always kept polished and in tip-top condition. Any kind of tools or machinery he owned was always kept clean and well-oiled. He loved to do carpentry work, and could often be found at his workbench down in the basement working on a woodworking project. When I was small, one year he made me a medium- sized wooden chest for my doll clothes for Christmas, and Grandma had sewn some nice, new doll clothes! That was a great gift! He made my Grandma's sewing table, which I now own, and made several Wahoo game boards and bookcases. He could almost always be found tinkering with something. Later in life, Millard and Edna had a travel trailer and used to go camping quite a lot in the summer time, quite often to the Croton-Hardy Dam.
Millard hated his middle name and always signed his name with only a middle initial. Even Dad (Vern) didn't know what his middle name was. When I became interested in genealogy in 1981, his wife, Edna, finally told me his middle name. Today, in 1998 I find that he was named after a step-son of Millard's grandmother, who would also have been Millard's second cousin once removed. Grandpa had a rather quiet manner, and a dry sense of humor. He used to put catsup on everything-scrambled or fried eggs, mashed potatoes and gravy—everything.

John’s father was of Scottish descent, and was an interurban motorman for many years, and later a bridge swinger in Grand Haven. His mother was of English descent and suffered from diabetes. He had two older sisters, Bessie, who died at thirty-one giving birth to her only child (who survived), and Blanche, who lived to be eighty. He grew up in Coopersville, and moved to Grand Rapids sometime after 1920. During his life he had various industrial jobs, and later owned a Shell service station in Grand Rapids. He was a quiet man with a subtle sense of humor who enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking, and watching sports. He was a basketball player on an early Coopersville school team. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack.
Lyda was a very kind person who kept a neat home. As a young girl, she loved school and was very disappointed when she had to quit to help at home. She learned to sew at a young age and made dresses for a neighbor girl. There were many clothing items and quilts made by her, and she was also very talented at embroidery. She kept busy at it until cataracts made her vision deteriorate. She was very close with her older sister, Carrie. She had many friends, and enjoyed playing cards and taking trips up north. In 1968 she was a passenger in a serious car accident which killed a very good friend, and after that she was afraid to drive. She adored cats and had a large collection of cat figurines. 'QUININE' IN UNLABELED BOTTLE KILLS PARENTS; 3 BABES LEFT
MRS. M'CUMBER, 26, CARR SETTLEMENT, IS SECOND VICTIM
Places 'Medicine' in Coffee, Seized with Convulsions and Dies Before
Physician Can Make Long Drive
CORONOR HUSTON LEAVES THIS MORNING TO PROBE TWO MYSTERY DEATHS
Death Potion to Be Analyzed Says Prosecutor Matthews Who Thinks Case Is One of Accidental Fatalities. Mistaking strychnine in an unlabelled bottle for quinine, Mrs. Lillian McCumber, 26, mother of three little boys, of Carr Settlement, met death within an hour Friday afternoon.
Her husband, Russell C. McCumber, 31 years, died suddenly on Jan. 28, supposedly of angina pectoris. It is now recalled by relatives that he had taken a dose of "quinine" from the unlabelled bottle, for a cold, was seized with convulsions and died before a physician could arrive.
Huston Starts Investigation. Coroner E.M. Huston leaves this morning for Carr Settlement to conduct an investigation into the death of Mrs. McCumber. He was notified Friday night of the woman's death by Dr. Hunt. Dr. W.C. Martin, coroner, is confined to his house by illness in Scottville. Mr. Huston will make the long drive to Logan township with a team and double sleigh.
The bottle containing the death-dealing mixture is in Dr. Hunt's possession. It will be analysed, says Prosecutor K.B. Matthews. "It looks like accidental death", said the prosecutor Saturday night to The News.
Served Big Dinner Friday. Mrs. McCumber, with the assistance of her
mother-in-law, Mrs. W. R. Sanders of Flint, served dinner Friday to a number of
men who were buzzing wood at the McCumber home. She seemed to have recovered
from an indisposition which necessitated the call of Dr. Ivan Hunt of Scottville
last Sunday. Friday afternoon, Mrs. McCumber complained of not feeling
well. "I'll take a dose of quinine, mother, and see if that won't help me," Mrs.
McCumber said to Mrs. Sanders. She poured some of the "quinine" from the
unlabelled bottle, where her husband got his death dose, into a cup of coffee
which she drank. This was at 4 o'clock.
Death Follows Quickly - Convulsions followed. Death came within the hour. Mrs.
Sanders called the men cutting wood as soon as her daughter-in-law became ill.
Dr. Hunt was summoned, but Mrs. McCumber died before he could make the long
drive.
Mr. McCumber, the husband, met his death almost without warning. He had been
cutting bolts and ate a hearty dinner. He complained of having a cold, and took
a dose of medicine from the (Continued on Page 8, Column 1) p. 8: unlabelled
bottle.
Almost immediately he complained of pains around his heart. Dr. Hunt was
summoned but the patient had expired before the physician reached the home.
Death was ascribed to angina pectoris.
Mystery Surrounds Medicine. No one knows how the strychnine came to be in the
home or in the unlabelled bottle. It is supposed both Mr. and Mrs. McCumber
thought it to be quinine. This double death is particularly pitiful as th
