William J. Emery was one of the first settlers of Robinson Township arriving around 1879, where he purchased 80 acres of marshes, swamps and undeveloped soil in Section 10 of Olive Township. He immediately began to clear the land and start his own successful farm with fields of crops, cattle, horses and other farm stock. William was very respected in his community and was often called upon for his legal advice. He served on several boards in his community, including school boards & one in Ottawa County with Judge Padgham. In William and Catherine’s earlier years he owned a general dry goods store and manufactured cigars in Agnew, Michigan. Sometime in the early 1900’s William converted to the Seventh-day-Adventist religion. Due to his newly found religion, William began experiencing a boycott because he refused to have his store open on Saturdays. It was a hard decision to make but he decided to sell his General Store rather than to suffer huge losses from his business and lose good friends. In the 1912 Atlas he was listed as a "Stockraiser". His farm became his source of income and he remained a farmer until his death.
