Maps of Marne-Berlin Cemetery
The Marne Cemetery Lies on the bank of Sand Creek. Although the
cemetery is actually in
Tallmadge Township, Section 2, Town 7 north, 13 west, it is maintained by Wright
Township.
This cemetery is located in the village of Marne (name changed
from Berlin to Marne during the
World War but the cemetery is still known as Berlin. Many old people are buried
on this site,
but not much attention was given to records. With the assistance of Mr. Glenn
Bingham, sexton, I was able to copy from burial permits many other names. In
regards to its age, the first burial was made in 1841 (Lucia Lockwood Monroe,
wife of William, a pioneer of Kent County) 1855.
Another one was Aaron Bell, 1781-1848. My last visit for inscriptions was
November, 1938.
(Per Mr. Mohnke who gave this information to the Library of Michigan.)

"Let not ambition mock their useful toil
Their homely joys and destiny obscure
Nor grandeur hear with disdainful smile
The short and simple annals of the poor.
The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power
All that beauty, all that wealthy ere gave
Awaits alike the inevitable hour
The paths of glory lead but to the grave."
Thomas Gray
