Gustav Hubert

Page 184 - GUSTAV HUBERT is manager of the Grand Haven Manufacturing Company, of Grand Haven, Mich. The firm manufactures wagon jacks, shears, punches, celery plows and does a general blacksmithing and wagon repair business. Under the able management of our subject this business is now in a flourishing condition and the company enjoys an extensive trade.

Mr. Hubert is a native of Germany, his birth having occurred in 1846 in Prussia, where the days of his boyhood and youth were passed. He attended the common schools in accordance with the laws of his country until fourteen years of age and then began serving a four years’ apprenticeship to the blacksmith’s and wagonmaker’s trade. He is therefore now a practical workman and, as he thoroughly understands the business, is capable of managing and directing others. Having arrived at man’s estate, he determined to seek a home in the New World, and in 1869 crossed the briny deep, landing in New York. He did not tarry long in the Eastern metropolis, but made his way at once to Kent County, Mich., and has since lived in this State. There he sought and secured employment at his trade, which he followed until the year 1871, when he came to Grand Haven. Here he has since resided. Forming a partnership with his father-in-law, August Hubert, he established the works of the Grand Haven Manufacturing Company and has successfully conducted the business up to the present time, doing a good local trade and receiving many orders from foreign markets. Our subject invented and patented the "Boss" wagon jack, which he now manufactures and which is meeting with a good sale. In 1892, he patented the celery plow, another of his inventions. It is used in the cultivation of celery, one of the chief products of Michigan, and has proven quite successful.

In 1873, a marriage was celebrated in Grand Haven which united the destinies of our subject and Miss Augusta Hubert, daughter of August Hubert, who is Treasurer of the Grand Haven Manufacturing Company. Unto them has been born a family of seven children, two sons and three daughters, who in order of birth are as follows: Matilda, Bertha, Henry, Annie and Frederick. The two deceased are Edward and Theresa.

In politics, Mr. Hubert is a supporter of Democratic principles, but has never been an aspirant for official preferment. He cares not to enter the political arena, desiring rather to give his entire time and attention to his business interests. He possesses considerable inventive genius, is a painstaking and thorough workman and is now enjoying a well-deserved success. He need never have occasion to regret leaving his native land and coming to America, for he has found in the New World a comfortable home, a good business, has gained prosperity and has made many pleasant friends, who esteem him highly for the many excellencies of his character and his sterling worth.
